Essex NHS trust faces criminal prosecution over sepsis deaths of girls aged two and three at Broomfield Hospital

Zadie Ajetunmobi, three, waited more than seven hours for life-saving intravenous antibiotics and died within ten hours of reaching Broomfield in November 2022. Selina Samarina, two, was sent home by a doctor in April 2024 and died two days later. The Care Quality Commission has charged Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust three times. It is due at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in December.

A coroner ruled Zadie's death could have been 'prevented' had sepsis guidelines been followed.

Staff had not updated local sepsis guidance since 2017, her family were told.

Parents Theo and Rhiannon learned of the antibiotics delay only two months later.
