Aaryan Aggarwal, 19, of Chigwell, Essex, pleaded not guilty at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court to sending Jess Carter a message containing a racial slur during England's quarter-final win over Sweden on 17 July last year. The message allegedly read "well done, stupid ugly" before using a racial slur. Aggarwal was released on bail with a condition barring him from contacting Carter or posting about her online, and will face trial at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on 3 March.

Carter has previously said racist abuse left her too scared to leave her hotel room during the tournament.

A second man, Nigel Dewale, 60, received a suspended jail sentence in March after pleading guilty to sending abusive posts referencing Carter's race on TikTok.

Carter told BBC Sport the abuse 'totally devalues you as a human being' and knocked her confidence on the pitch.
