The European Union has imposed its biggest single wave of sanctions since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, targeting almost 1,600 individuals and companies. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said more than half of the listings target the production chain for the ballistic missiles Russia uses to kill Ukrainian civilians. A further 77 individuals are sanctioned for organising or running sham elections in occupied Ukrainian territory.

The package is the largest single sanctions listing the EU has imposed since Russia launched its full-scale war on Ukraine nearly five years ago.

Kallas said the measures specifically disrupt the supply chain for drones and ballistic missiles striking Ukrainian civilians daily.

The 77 individuals targeted over sham elections reflect the EU's refusal to recognise Russia's claim to any occupied Ukrainian territory.
