The European Parliament has backed a resolution calling on the EU to designate entities and individuals linked to the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organisations, passing the motion 381-167 with 15 abstentions. The measure now goes to the European Council, which holds the actual power to make it binding EU policy. The resolution also demands member states cut public funding to Islamic fundamentalist groups and increase scrutiny of civil society and youth organisations linked to Brotherhood networks.
The resolution calls for a joint EU strategy to counter what it describes as 'Islamist infiltration', including tackling 'double messaging' — moderating language in political settings while promoting extremist views in mosques.
The European People's Party, the Parliament's largest group, drafted the resolution; left-wing groups voted against it from the outset.
The Trump administration earlier this year designated Brotherhood branches in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon as terror organisations, piling pressure on the EU to follow suit.
