Ex-world champion boxer Joe Cordina is cleared of assault after a judge rules his Cardiff petrol station punch was self-defence

Ex-world champion boxer Joe Cordina is cleared of assault after a judge rules his Cardiff petrol station punch was self-defence

Jamie O'Brien, 33, who took the punch, had already pleaded guilty to assaulting Cordina. CCTV showed him shoulder-barging the boxer in Pentwyn in February, and Cordina, 34, then floored him with one blow. District Judge Charlotte Murphy called it 'a single, measured, controlled punch'. The incident had seen Cordina refused entry to the US for a WBO lightweight title fight.

The barge came two weeks after police warned Cordina of a threat to his life.

Cordina said O'Brien had his hands in his pockets: 'I don't know what people carry.'

Cordina told the court he 'pretty much' faced losing his boxing licence if convicted.
