Bake Off pays tribute after contestant leaves the tent to be with dying mother

Nikki, a contestant on The Great British Bake Off, has revealed her mother Joyce passed away earlier this year after she left the tent mid-episode during Bread Week to be at her side. Writing on Instagram, Nikki said her mum 'deteriorated quite quickly over a short period of time' and that none of her family were prepared for how fast things changed. Channel 4 aired a tribute at the end of Tuesday's episode showing a photo of Nikki with Joyce and the message: 'With our deepest condolences to Nikki and family following the loss of her mum Joyce.'

Nikki said Joyce was the inspiration behind her love of baking and was 'over the moon' when her daughter was picked for the show.

During the episode, host Alison Hammond stepped in to present Nikki's Cheesy Pesto Tear and Share Garlic Bread to judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson in her absence.

Nigella commented on Instagram: 'Sending all love to you, sweetest Nikki.'
