Family sues Oregon school for $1m after more than 50 pupils were served pretzels seasoned with OVEN CLEANER

A sixth-grader identified as L.L. ate one of 37 contaminated pretzels at Fowler Middle School in Tigard, near Portland, and was left with a burning sensation in his mouth and throat. School staff held him in a room for roughly an hour, returning him to class without alerting his parents. Poison control was not reached until 27 minutes after the incident, and families were only notified by email two hours later. The district said a kitchen worker had confused the caustic cleaner with salt.

Substitute cook Chloe Larson realised something was amiss when she tasted the seasoning herself, immediately felt a burning sensation, and traced the error back to the cleaner.

Tigard Police closed their inquiry without charges, citing no probable cause.

The suit names Principal Cindy Pellicci and seeks up to $950,220.85.
