Farage faces possible Clacton recall petition after standards commissioner interviews him over £5m gift

Parliamentary standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg spent 30 minutes interviewing Nigel Farage at the Palace of Westminster last month about his disclosure obligations in connection with a £5m gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. If the commissioner concludes that a serious breach occurred, the case would be referred to the standards committee, which can recommend a suspension of more than 10 days — the threshold at which a recall petition and a second by-election in Clacton would be triggered. Farage maintains the money was for personal security rather than political purposes and denies any wrongdoing.
Harborne is one of two crypto billionaires who each gave Reform £36m, and the pair of donations have renewed calls for a cap on party gifts.
The investigation has been under way since May 2024, when it was reportedly disclosed that Harborne passed Farage the £5m shortly before that year's general election.
Reform is also facing an internal inquiry into whether senior aides James Orr and Dan Jukes solicited unlawful overseas donations during a sting operation carried out by reporters from Verbatim.
