Man is charged with ramming Australian MP as his family reveal she has been their friend for 20 years

Brendan Nugent, 43, faces three charges, including intentionally causing serious injury and harming a federal official, and will appear at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. Helen Haines, 65, has lost a leg and surgeons are fighting to save the other. The driver allegedly did a U-turn and then reversed to hit her a second time. His father Rod Nugent called it 'devastating and unfathomable'.

Nugent reportedly walked into Haines' office last month seeking a face-to-face meeting.

Barber Ricky Jefferies dragged the suspect from the car and took a knife from his pocket.

The intentional serious injury charge carries a maximum jail term of 20 years.
