Father of man charged with ramming Australian MP Helen Haines says she has been a family friend for 20 years

Rod Nugent and his partner Christine Cunningham called the attack on Helen Haines 'devastating and unfathomable' and pledged to help Victoria Police. Their son Brendan Nugent, 43, faces three charges, including intentionally causing serious injury and harming a Commonwealth official. Haines, 65, has lost a leg as surgeons fight to save the other. Nugent is to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Nugent allegedly U-turned his LandCruiser and rammed Haines twice outside her Wangaratta office.

Barber Ricky Jefferies, who helped detain the suspect, was phoned by Albanese.

Nugent's neighbours in Tarrawingee allege years of threats, including running over a dog.
