Alzheimer's patients are to get ADHD drugs in a trial backed by Andy Burnham, whose father died of the disease
Angela Bucksey, 67, from Cambridgeshire, is the first patient to begin treatment on the AD-SMART study, which opens with diabetes drug metformin and ADHD medicine atomoxetine. Experts expect the trial's design to cut testing time by more than half and save millions of pounds. Roy Burnham, a former telephone engineer, died last month aged 86 in a care home, never knowing his son had risen to become Prime Minister.
Every drug is measured against one shared placebo group, and any that fail can be dropped fast.
Andy Burnham said: 'I have made dementia research a national priority.'
Angela Bucksey on joining the trial: 'I will fight back.'
