Javits Frimpong, 15, had arrived from Ghana just a year earlier to live with his taxi-driver father Thomas in the Bronx. On Thursday morning he was shot in the abdomen while walking to school and died hours later at St Barnabas Hospital. Thomas Frimpong says the school principal informed him, just two days before the shooting, that two boys had been suspended for bullying his son.
Surveillance footage shows Javits sprinting along a Claremont street, pursued by a figure dressed entirely in black, before he collapses in the distance.
Three teenage boys aged 16 to 18 were observed fleeing in the direction of Crotona Park; police have made no arrests and say they have yet to establish a motive.
'I lost him. I don't know what to do now,' Thomas Frimpong told reporters, adding he then had to phone Javits's mother back in Ghana to break the news.
