Jubel Reji Kurian, the 23-year-old Nottingham University postgraduate whose father is suing boxing event organisers for £200,000, claiming a referee failed to intervene before the fatal knockout punch.

Reji Kurian is suing Ultra Events Ltd for £200,000 after his son Jubal died four days after collapsing in a charity boxing ring at Nottingham's Harvey Haddon Sports Centre in March 2023. Jubal Reji Kurian, a 23-year-old Nottingham University postgraduate student from the United Arab Emirates, suffered bleeding to both sides of the brain after a knockout blow in the third and final round and never regained consciousness. The family's barrister Harry Trusted told London's High Court the case is straightforward: the referee should have stopped the fight before the final punch was thrown.

Jubal had moved to the UK just six months before his death to study sports medicine, hoping to become an NHS physiotherapist.

Ultra Events Ltd denies all liability, arguing its referee was highly experienced and fully competent to supervise the amateur three-round bout.

Trusted told the judge: 'If that punch had not been delivered, Mr Kurian would have survived.'
