FBI blames North Korean hackers for the $6.3billion Binance theft, the biggest crypto heist in history
Binance halted all withdrawals after a hack through a single engineer's laptop drained an estimated $6.3bn — surpassing the previous record $1.5bn Bybit breach in 2025.Kim Jong Un, whose country's TraderTraitor unit carried out the Binance raid using access gained through a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, according to investigators.
North Korea's elite Lazarus Group — also known as TraderTraitor — siphoned $6.3billion from Binance in a window as short as 20 minutes on Thursday evening, the FBI has confirmed, making it the largest financial heist ever recorded. The attackers got their initial foothold by breaching a DevOps engineer's laptop before exploiting multiple further vulnerabilities across the platform. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng says every user loss will be covered and the firm is working with law enforcement.
Blockchain firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis both identified the Lazarus Group "with high confidence" as the attackers.
Binance says blockchain partners have already frozen at least $3billion of the stolen assets on-chain — roughly half the total.
North Korea previously stole $1.5billion from the Bybit exchange; experts say Pyongyang uses crypto theft to finance the state.
