Trump disputes the FBI's finding that North Korea stole a record $6.3bn from Binance, saying 'we don't know'
The FBI warned that those responsible for the Binance raid are converting stolen funds into Ethereum and laundering them through decentralised finance platforms.Kim Jong Un, whose country's TraderTraitor unit carried out the Binance raid using access gained through a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, according to investigators.
Trump broke with his own FBI director Kash Patel on Saturday night, telling reporters at a Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago he was "not concerned" and that his administration was still "learning about" the $6.3bn Binance theft hours after the bureau formally named North Korea's TraderTraitor unit as responsible.
The FBI, working alongside the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, said TraderTraitor — linked to the notorious Lazarus Group — drained Binance in roughly 20 minutes.
Trump added: 'If it is North Korea, we'll talk to them about it' — a notably relaxed response given Kim Jong Un's regime is accused of funding its weapons programme through exactly such heists.
Binance has already replenished 90% of stolen assets using company funds and says withdrawals are set to reopen on Sunday, with all customer losses to be covered.
