FIFA moves to scrap the Peace Prize it created and awarded to Trump just a year ago
FIFA's Football Social Responsibility Committee is to investigate and likely abolish the Peace Prize that governing body president Gianni Infantino personally created and presented to President Donald Trump in December 2025. The review was ordered at a tense FIFA Council meeting in Zurich on October 15, with several council members pushing for the prize to be eliminated entirely. A decision is expected at the next council meeting in Doha on December 16.
Infantino presented Trump with the golden trophy and medal at the 2026 World Cup draw, pointing to Trump's role in the Gaza ceasefire — but never publicly explained how the recipient was chosen.
FIFA's own statutes bar political interference in football, and council members raised concerns that honouring a sitting head of state amounted to a conflict of interest.
The prize drew ridicule as a consolation award after Trump missed out on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize — an honour won by Venezuelan activist María Corina Machado, who subsequently donated it to Trump.
