Fighter jet escorts Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to emergency landing in Bulgaria after anonymous 'bomb threat'

The anonymous bomb threat was reportedly called in by an Austrian citizen who had no connection to flight OS83 — they were not even a passenger. Those on board were said to include a group of young delegates travelling to speak at the United Nations. All 51 passengers and six crew disembarked safely after the Airbus A320 landed in Sofia on Sunday evening. Israeli media suggested the threat appeared to be a false alarm.

The crew triggered a general emergency declaration near the Romanian border.

The incident occurred only weeks after a Flydubai jet was the target of an alleged jihadist hijack attempt.

Bulgarian authorities established a crisis headquarters and began a full inspection of the aircraft.
