A fire investigation is under way following a major blaze at an accommodation block at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire. Crews tackled the fire at Gaza Barracks, off Hipswell Road, from 7:48pm Thursday through the night, with smoke visible for miles. One person was admitted to hospital with smoke inhalation at 2:43am. North Yorkshire fire appliances were reinforced by crews from County Durham and Darlington, including an aerial ladder platform.

Catterick Garrison, near Richmond, is one of Britain's largest military bases, housing 14,000 personnel.

Local councillor Kevin Foster said his 'immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including military personnel, their families and emergency services.'
