Five people are killed in fresh ethnic violence in India's Manipur state after mass protests over a ceasefire deal

The killings in Manipur's northeast came in the wake of mass protests in Imphal demanding the abrogation of a ceasefire arrangement between rival ethnic factions. The violence involves Kuki and Naga communities in a state that has seen prolonged intercommunal conflict.

Demonstrators in Imphal had been pressing for the ceasefire deal to be scrapped before the latest bloodshed erupted.

Manipur has remained one of India's most restive states, with ethnic tensions repeatedly flaring into deadly clashes.
