Five people found shot dead in a suburban Chicago home died in an apparent murder-suicide, police now say

Neighbours in Mundelein heard bangs just before noon on Sunday but dismissed them as firecrackers. The bodies of three men and two women were not discovered until 11.45pm, when a relative who could not reach one of the victims asked police to carry out a welfare check. Four of the dead were from the same family, and police believe the fifth was in a domestic relationship with the suspected shooter.

The Wellington Avenue home is reportedly owned by retired vets Rebecca and James Schmidt.

Police recovered two handguns, and all five victims were shot at close range.

Neighbour Samuel Escobedo recalled the couple dancing to Paul Anka: 'Very lovely family.'
