Five people including two children are rescued after drifting 3,400 miles across the Pacific for THREE MONTHS on a one-hour boat trip
Nine people from Micronesia set off on a routine one-hour crossing between islands on 30 July, only to be swept 3,400 miles off course by a storm. The survivors were finally spotted on Sunday by villagers on Fanning Island, a remote atoll in Kiribati with little medical infrastructure.
The US Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force searched for 10 days before abandoning the operation on 9 August, a sweep that took in 25,000 nautical miles.
All five survivors have refused to speak publicly about their ordeal and are being cared for by a local pastor while officials push for urgent transfer to Kiritimati Island.
