Flávio Bolsonaro, son of jailed Jair, demands Brazil's election is annulled after Lula wins a historic fourth term
Flávio Bolsonaro reacts to his defeat in the Brazilian presidential election, in which Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured 51.7 per cent of the vote after a Supreme Court ruling extended voting hours in Bahia.Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving his sentence under house arrest, lost to Lula da Silva in 2022 — no candidate trailing after a Brazilian first round has ever won a runoff.
Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin, a Lula appointee, ordered a two-hour voting extension just three minutes before polls were due to close. Bolsonaro says the move 'changed the rules in the middle of the game'. Yet his own campaign also asked for more time, and he trails by nearly 4.4 million votes. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, took 51.8 per cent to Bolsonaro's 48.2.
Lula is the first in Brazilian history to win after finishing second in round one.
Lula told supporters: 'This was a defeat for denialism and lies.'
A fund tracking Brazil's Bovespa index dived nearly 15 per cent on the result.
