Flames burst from a LATAM jet's engine moments before takeoff in Peru as passengers sit metres from the blaze
Flight LA2302 was bound for Piura in northern Peru when fire broke out from the left engine of an Airbus A320 at Jorge Chávez International Airport on Monday. The flames reached the left wing and landing gear while passengers were still on board. Airport fire crews put out the blaze before everyone aboard was evacuated. LATAM confirmed there were no injuries, describing the cause as an 'unforeseen technical event'.
Before the fire took hold, the captain had already informed passengers of a problem with the left landing gear.
The incident came only days after a separate LATAM aircraft plunged 23,000ft in a matter of minutes due to a technical fault.
