Lula wins a historic fourth term in Brazil as Flavio Bolsonaro, son of jailed Jair, vows to seek annulment
Flávio Bolsonaro reacts to his defeat in the Brazilian presidential election, in which Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured 51.7 per cent of the vote after a Supreme Court ruling extended voting hours in Bahia.Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving his sentence under house arrest, lost to Lula da Silva in 2022 — no candidate trailing after a Brazilian first round has ever won a runoff.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva submitted a petition seeking longer voting hours, claiming buses were not getting voters to polling stations. A Supreme Court justice he had appointed then approved a two-hour extension across the country. Bolsonaro has said it is "impossible to recognise" the result, in which Lula took 51.79% to his 48.21%. A Tokyo-listed fund tracking Brazil's Bovespa dropped by nearly 15%.
Bolsonaro's campaign had separately sought an extension of its own, pointing to heavy rainfall in the south.
His father, Jair Bolsonaro, was sentenced to 27 years for plotting a coup.
Lula, who celebrates his 81st birthday on Tuesday, hailed "a defeat for denialism and lies".
