A university student's body was found at a drainage entrance in Hanoi on Friday after floodwaters swept him into a sewer, bringing the death toll to at least four. Three members of the same family were killed the previous evening when a landslide buried them in Phu Tho province. Days of torrential rain have left more than 16,000 homes across northern and central Vietnam underwater, with Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh provinces among the worst affected.

Nearly 25,000 hectares of rice, crops and aquaculture have been submerged, and authorities have moved over 500 people out of low-lying areas.

Floodwater on many Hanoi streets exceeded three feet in depth, forcing schools to close or switch to online classes while soldiers helped residents shift their belongings to safety.
