Florida judge asks 'who leaves four little kids alone to go on a cruise?' as mother sobs in court

Nathalie Belizaire, 29, was arrested at PortMiami on Monday after US Customs officers seized her as she disembarked the Carnival Conquest from a three-day Bahamas trip, leaving four children — including a 2-month-old infant and a 2-year-old — hiding together in a bathroom in her North Miami Beach apartment. The baby's father raised the alarm after spotting what appeared to be a cruise ticket on Belizaire's WhatsApp story; when he visited the flat on Saturday he could hear the children inside but found no adult. Belizaire, who wept in the dock and used her orange jail suit to wipe away tears, now faces four felony counts of child neglect. Her attorney denies the allegations.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer told the court: 'You cannot make this up — we are just grateful nothing worse happened.'

Belizaire had told the baby's father the children would be left with their great-grandmother, who told police her daughter-in-law never showed up.

Police bodycam shows an officer counting the children as they emerged from the bathroom one by one: 'Just the two of you... three... four?'
