Formal investigation is launched after a railway bridge tears the roof off a Newport school bus and injures three children
Gruff Townsend, 13, was sitting at the back of the upper deck when the double-decker hit the bridge on Tregare Street, Newport, shortly before 8am on Tuesday. He later told his mother Jo Townsend it 'all went dark', with 'screaming and metal scraping metal'. A pole caught him on the head, though he was discharged around midday. Newport council and the bus operator have both opened investigations.
Lullabyz nursery cleared its own children to another location so paramedics could treat the injured pupils on the premises.
Among those on board were pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed and St Julian's School.
Rail services between Newport and Hereford were suspended while engineers checked the bridge for damage.
