Former FBI chief James Comey is charged a THIRD time over an alleged 2016 leak to the New York Times
James Comey, whose daughter Maurene's dismissal Judge Jesse Furman warned would "unsettle the very equilibrium" of the constitution, was himself fired as FBI director by Trump's attorney general in 2017.
Prosecutors accuse James Comey of breaching the Espionage Act over a story on Yahoo aiding FBI email surveillance. The two counts were filed under seal on 5 October, exactly 10 years after publication. The Justice Department says it used a criminal information to stop the clock on the statute of limitations. Comey called it an 'appalling abuse' and insists he is 'still innocent'.
Comey's lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, says two earlier prosecution teams declined to charge anyone.
The charges were unsealed hours after a judge ruled daughter Maurene Comey was unlawfully fired.
His first case was dismissed in 2025, and an '86 47' seashell indictment followed in April.
