Former Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling is sentenced to 10 years for killing her newborn son she admitted depriving of oxygen

Laken Snelling, 22, told the court she "ended his life" by depriving her newborn son of oxygen, then fell asleep on top of him before hiding his body in a trash bag in her closet. The former University of Kentucky cheerleader was handed a 10-year prison sentence on Friday, having pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.

Police were alerted by her roommates after blood was discovered in her room and strange sounds had been heard coming from it.

The prosecution pushed for 13 years under the plea agreement, but the judge opted for a 10-year term instead.

'I was under a lot of emotional stress and my baby came unexpectedly — and instead of helping him, I cleaned up and didn't tell anyone,' Snelling told the court.
