Former Mexican prosecutor faces treason case over secret CIA drug raid after two US agents died in crash

César Jáuregui, ex-attorney general of Chihuahua state, is accused of launching the joint CIA operation without telling Mexico City. A federal judge is due to rule on Saturday whether the treason indictment can go ahead. His lawyer Héctor Villasana says prosecutors want an 'exemplary punishment' to prevent a repeat of America's removal of Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro.

Mexico says neither CIA agent had 'formal accreditation' to take part in operations.

Jáuregui is held in a maximum-security prison after his arrest on October 17.

The US State Department says it is watching the case closely.
