Former US vice president Mike Pence demands Trump restore Russia sanctions as Republican revolt grows over Putin diesel deal
Republican congressman Don Bacon has warned that Trump's entire legislative agenda is at risk in the lame-duck Congress unless he moves to punish Russia's war machine. Michigan Senate hopeful Mike Rogers said his vote would have gone to the sanctions bill and that America cannot give Putin 'an inch'. Energy Secretary Chris Wright insisted the waiver was 'not an economic lifeline' for Moscow. Trump waived the Graham Act sanctions on Friday.
Pence said the waiver 'dishonors the legacy' of the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev hailed the suspension as 'truly historic'.
Ted Cruz, typically a Trump loyalist, called the waiver 'a mistake'.
