Former world champion Joe Cordina is cleared of assault after a judge rules his Cardiff petrol station punch was self-defence

Former world champion Joe Cordina is cleared of assault after a judge rules his Cardiff petrol station punch was self-defence

District Judge Charlotte Murphy called it 'a single, measured, controlled punch' and rejected any suggestion Cordina was retaliating. She found Jamie O'Brien's shoulder barge was a 'deliberate assault', two weeks after police warned Cordina of a threat to his life. The February clash in Pentwyn saw the 34-year-old denied entry to the US for a WBO title fight.

Jamie O'Brien, 33, had already pleaded guilty to assault by beating against Cordina.

Cordina told Cardiff Magistrates' Court he first thought O'Brien was a fan wanting a photo.

The 'hugely relieved' boxer says he is now focused on 'getting back in the ring'.
