Officers forced entry to a home on Sawyers Grove, Brentwood, at 7.20am on Friday after a reported neighbour dispute in which a door had been damaged. A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and remain in custody while explosive ordnance disposal experts examine the objects. A 100-metre cordon stretches across much of Sawyers Grove and parts of Sawyers Hall Lane and Highland Avenue.

Residents were sent to a rendezvous point at King George's Playing Fields Pavilion while the cordon remains in place.

Nearby Michael Page, 84, said he was told simply to leave with no explanation: 'They wouldn't tell me anything.'
