France's cities fall quiet under targeted night curfews after weekend riots, but students vow fresh protests on Saturday

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu credited the curfews with restoring calm overnight and indicated they could be extended 'where the situation requires it'. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that police had 'lost control' in certain cities and tendered his resignation, which President Emmanuel Macron turned down. More than 2,500 people have been arrested, with roughly 1,000 officers reported injured.

In Paris, Place de la République and Les Halles were locked down, while Marseille, Lyon and Lille brought in restrictions targeting youths.

Student union UNEF is pressing ahead with Saturday's planned protests: 'We carry on.'

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin says 123 people are already detained awaiting trial.
