A 14-year-old pupil opened fire on two members of staff at Joseph Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, east of Marseille, after concealing a 12-gauge shotgun inside a guitar case to get it past the school gates. The headteacher, 53, was shot in the leg, and a 37-year-old teacher was hit by pellets in the thigh; both were hospitalised with wounds not regarded as life-threatening. A third staff member was grazed. Before officers reached the scene, a staff member showed remarkable bravery by disarming the boy in a stairwell.

Prosecutors said the boy fired several shots across two floors — once directly at a teacher and once into a classroom — narrowly missing pupils who were left severely shaken.

Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said it had not yet been established whether the headteacher and teacher were deliberately targeted or caught in the crossfire.

France's Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced the attack on social media and said he would go to Aubagne together with the Interior Minister.
