French far-left activist apologises for calling a mother threatened with rape 'collateral damage' but insists protests weren't to blame
Bettina Zourli, a gender studies graduate who backs Jean-Luc Melenchon's La France Insoumise, now calls her own words "shocking". She claims she meant the rape threat had "NOTHING TO DO" with the October 17 mobilisation. The woman says a rioter threatened her after she tried to stop looters raiding the shop below her flat. She was at home with her child.
Gabriel Attal, the Renaissance party's presidential candidate, condemned Zourli on Instagram.
Last weekend's protests saw 3,000 shops ransacked and almost 1,000 police officers injured.
