France braces for 'Act II' of rioting as curfews bring an uneasy calm to Paris and Marseille
Protest groups have called a second round of action for Saturday, hailing a 'legitimate revolt' against the government, while fears mount over tonight's Paris Saint-Germain v Barcelona Champions League tie. Around 5,000 riot police, armoured cars and water cannon are lined up for the match. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu credited 'targeted curfews' for the quiet night, and justice minister Gérald Darmanin said 123 rioters are now awaiting trial.
Emmanuel Macron, away on a three-day Gulf trip, has been branded 'pathetic' by opponents.
Interior minister Laurent Nuñez offered to resign, but Macron told him to stay.
More than 3,000 shops were ransacked and almost 1,000 police officers injured.
