French police arrest 1,314 people as 53 officers are injured in a second weekend of violent cost-of-living protests
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez attributed the violence to black-clad 'ultra-left' groups, describing 'an extremely elevated level of violence' following what had otherwise been largely peaceful marches. Around 70,000 police and gendarmes were deployed across the country. In Poitiers, a 19-year-old protester reportedly suffered the loss of an eye during a riot police charge. Marine Le Pen is due to speak to 10,000 National Rally members in Orleans this afternoon.
Officers confiscated metal balls, slingshots, fireworks and even a katana from protesters.
The ministry put the number of marchers at 410,000, while the CGT union estimated more than 800,000.
Macron called foreign leaders' comments 'unacceptable and even stupid' after Trump blamed immigration for the unrest.
