Tyler Griffith, 29, who brought Merseyside's railways to a standstill by hiding in Wirral line tunnels and riding on a train roof to escape police, has been spared jail, receiving a 12-month suspended sentence, 100 hours of unpaid work and an £800 fine.

Chief Inspector Pete Wilcock called it the worst Merseyrail disruption in years, lasting four and a half hours.

'Extremely irresponsible, reckless and dangerous,' Wilcock said, with officers and rail staff forced into harm's way.

Rail infrastructure body's Paul Owen called it 'unnecessary and frustrating', and traumatic for staff and passengers.
