September inflation came in at 3.5 per cent, so the 3.9 per cent wage growth figure decides this year's triple lock rise. Rachel Vahey of AJ Bell warned that the government's promise to spare state-pension-only retirees from income tax still lacks 'crucial detail'. Pensioners with workplace or private pensions could face bigger tax bills. Chancellor John Healey is expected to confirm the new rates at the Budget on October 28.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham plans to change the triple lock from April 2030.

Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham of seeking to erode the state pension's value.

The full basic state pension will rise from £184.90 to £192.10 a week.
