Mark Johnston, London Gatwick's chief operating officer, will take the helm at Edinburgh Airport on October 1, replacing Gordon Dewar, who steps down after 14 years leading the organisation. Edinburgh-born and raised, Johnston previously held the role of managing director at Glasgow Airport, meaning his appointment brings him back to both Scotland and airport leadership north of the Border. Under Dewar's watch, Edinburgh's passenger numbers rose 85%, climbing from 9 million in 2012 to nearly 17 million last year.
Johnston described it as 'an exciting time' to be joining, with Edinburgh Airport embarking on the 'largest-ever capital investment programme in its history.'
Departing chief Dewar called the moment 'bittersweet' but said Johnston brings 'a wealth of aviation experience' and a deep knowledge of Scotland's market.
Gatwick has yet to name a replacement for Johnston as chief operating officer, with that search running separately.
