German arson suspect, 33, is sent to a psychiatric facility after police stopped him leaving Hitler's burning Eagle's Nest

Police say the German man, who has ties to the area, showed signs of mental illness under questioning. Detectives will still probe a possible political motive given the Kehlsteinhaus's Nazi past. Officers say the building near Berchtesgaden is unlikely to be salvageable. Around 200 firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, battled flames 1,834 metres up as the season's first heavy snow fell.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Maier said nobody else appears to have been involved in the fire.

Hitler visited at least 14 times, and Nazi chiefs planned the 1941 invasion of the USSR there.

Its red marble fireplace was a gift to Hitler from Benito Mussolini.
