German insurance giant Allianz eyes £5bn takeover of the AA as sale talks run for months

Allianz, the German insurer valued at more than £144bn, has been in discussions with the AA's advisers for several months over a potential £5bn acquisition of Britain's biggest breakdown provider. The AA serves more than 16 million customers and is owned by private equity firms TowerBrook Capital Partners, Warburg Pincus and Stonepeak. Negotiations remain at an early stage, a deal is far from guaranteed, and at least one other potential buyer has also been examining the business.
The AA's private equity owners appointed JP Morgan and Rothschild last year to explore a sale or a return to the London Stock Exchange.
Revenue at the AA climbed from £1.45bn in 2025 to £1.505bn last year, bolstering the case for a premium price tag.
Should no buyer emerge, a stock market flotation remains on the table, with banks already lined up for a potential 2027 listing.
