German police investigate after a vehicle crashed through a Leipzig airport fence near grounded Russian cargo planes
Flights on the north side of Leipzig/Halle Airport have been suspended and its north runway remains shut. Officers found the damaged fence shortly before 11pm on Saturday, which triggered a frantic search for possible trespassers. It comes just weeks after an explosive-laden drone was found near a runway in August, which German officials blamed on Russia. Moscow has denied the allegations.
Police said it was 'highly likely a vehicle must have crashed through the fence'.
Three Russian Antonov cargo planes have been stuck at the airport since the 2022 EU sanctions.
