Germany's Bavaria vows Hitler's Eagle's Nest will not be left a ruin after a fire guts the mountain retreat
Prosecutor Rainer Vietze says investigators are examining whether the fire had a political motive. A psychiatric report identified signs of mental illness in the 33-year-old German suspect, who has connections to the region and has been placed in a psychiatric facility. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said it was important to 'continue our work of remembrance'. Police had warned that the Kehlsteinhaus was unlikely to be saved.
Officers detained the suspect after stopping him on a motorcycle as he rode down the mountain following the blaze on Friday night.
Around 200 firefighters battled the flames at 1,834 metres in conditions of strong winds and heavy snow.
The guesthouse came through the war undamaged and has been run as a restaurant since 1952.
