Scientists have linked the glacial lake outburst on Langtang-Lirung mountain to climate change. The event measured magnitude 5.2 on the seismic scale and unleashed a torrent that killed at least 626 people, with nearly 3,000 more still missing across Nepal and Tibet. Dr Jonathan Carrivick of the University of Leeds warns that climate change is thawing permafrost and glaciers, increasing both the frequency and potentially the scale of such disasters. Experts estimate that 15 million people worldwide are now at risk from similar glacial flood events.
