Only the third blue diamond weighing more than eight carats ever offered at auction in the UK is going under the hammer on 1 October, with auctioneers Elmwood's estimating the pear-shaped 8.03 carat Fancy Light Blue diamond ring at between £1.5 million and £2 million. The ring is owned by a private collector in Glasgow and will feature in Elmwood's Fine Jewellery sale in London.
The only other UK-auctioned blue diamonds above eight carats were the 70.21 carat 'Idol's Eye' sold at Christie's in 1865 and the Wittelsbach Diamond at Sotheby's in 2008.
Joe Kendrick, head of sale at Elmwood's, called it 'a truly once in a lifetime piece' and predicted 'wide interest' from collectors worldwide.
Natural blue diamonds get their colour from trace amounts of boron in the crystal structure, making them among the rarest coloured diamonds on earth.
