Glasgow museums remove mummies from public view over consent concerns after ethics debate prompts policy rethink

The Hunterian Museum has draped Lady Shep-En-Hor's body in a specially made textile, so visitors can no longer see her ancient wrappings. Her sarcophagus, thought to have been held since 1820, stays on show. The University of Glasgow museum now bars open display of any human remains from outside the UK. Glasgow Life says remains will only go on view with 'documented and informed consent' from the dead.

Historian Sir Tom Devine said he sees no 'ethical problem' in displaying mummies respectfully.

National Museums Scotland is not considering any changes to its displays of human remains.
