Google Maps now shows live fuel prices as diesel hits record £2 a litre at 150 UK stations

Diesel has smashed through £2 a litre at up to 150 forecourts, with £10-a-gallon prices recorded for the first time, as Google Maps launches a feature allowing UK drivers to compare live pump prices at nearby stations. The app now pulls near real-time data from the government's Fuel Finder scheme, which requires stations to update prices within 30 minutes of any change. AA president Edmund King called it a 'massive step forward' for drivers hammered by soaring costs.
Diesel averaged 200.11p per litre on Wednesday — a record high surpassing the 2022 post-Ukraine-invasion peak, with petrol at 174.89p.
Households with a car could save around £40 a year by comparing prices, but experts warn Fuel Finder coverage remains patchy, with 200 stations failing to update diesel prices on time in September.
Pressure is mounting on Labour to scrap planned Fuel Duty rises in the New Year, with families already paying around £110 to fill a 55-litre diesel tank.
