Google has switched Lake Ontario's name to 'Lake America' on its maps for American users, following Trump's executive order last week directing federal agencies to adopt the new name amid a deepening trade war with Canada. Trump posted a screenshot of the change on Truth Social on Sunday, declaring himself delighted. Google confirmed Canadian users will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', while those outside both countries will see both names displayed.
MapQuest refused to make the change, posting 'We're not changing it' on X and even launching a tool letting users rename the lake themselves.
Apple Maps has also not changed the name, and Ontario premier Doug Ford put up a giant 'Lake Ontario. Now and Always' sign on the Canadian shoreline in defiance.
Seneca Nation president J. Conrad Seneca called Trump's order 'unpresidential', demanding reversal and noting the lake's name predates the United States by thousands of years.
